The Problem:

Many Canadians struggle to afford groceries while nearly half of all food produced is wasted annually, resulting in $58 billion in losses and significant environmental harm. There is a need for a user-friendly solution that reduces food waste and improves food accessibility.

The Solution:

Full Circle Meals connects restaurants with people who need food by redistributing fresh, unsold meals. Restaurants list leftovers, and anyone can claim them, reducing waste and feeding communities.

My Responsibilities:

Designed the landing page, business/customer page, and integrated Mapbox API. Conducted primary research, user interviews, brainstorming, wireframing, high-fidelity prototyping. Focused on seamless navigation, accessibility, usability. Created an intuitive platform to reduce food waste, improve food accessibility, balancing business and customer needs through user-centered design.

User Research: Understanding Food Waste in Restaurants

We conducted three interviews with local restaurants to understand the amount of food they waste and how they manage it. These interviews provided insights into their challenges, current waste management practices, and willingness to adopt solutions. This research informed our design decisions, ensuring the platform effectively addresses real user needs.

Restaurant

Visiting local restaurants to ask about food waste.

"We throw out 50 ounces in 4 Hours"

"We make at least $100 worth of waste each day."

"Last year we wasted so much food that we stopped preparing food in advance"

Secondary Research on Food Waste and Insecurity in Canada

We completed research to understand the scope of food waste and its impact in Canada. These insights helped inform the design approach and problem-solving for addressing food waste and food insecurity in Canada. Key findings include:

46 %

Of all food produced in Canada becomes waste.

$58 billion

Worth of food is wasted annually in Canada.

13 %

Of Canadians lack access to quality food, highlighting a critical gap in food security within the country.

What are the core findings from our research?

Two major insights generated from this research about food waste and food insecurity in Canada are:

Brainstorming Solutions

We explored ideas, features, and pages to tackle food waste, including waste tracking, recipe suggestions, and donation integrations, ensuring an intuitive and impactful user experience.

Ideas

  • Idea 1: Archive - how many leftovers given - “history”
  • Idea 2: Doordash / uber eats API automatically pulls up the restaurant's dish images
  • Idea 3: Restaurant review form - connect to google reviews

Features

  • Feature 1: AI assistance for food restrictions
  • Feature 2: Waste reduction metrics
  • Feature 3: Auth0 to login
  • Feature 4: Mapbox to track food

Pages

  • Page 1: Timeline to showcase the local leftovers from restaurants
  • Page 2: Create a place to match users with leftovers + notifications
  • Page 3: Put place where restaurants can post and users can notify that they are coming

Defining App Flow

Determining the app flow to effectively organize the app’s pages, ensuring a smooth user experience with clear navigation, structured interactions, and intuitive accessibility.
